TV Series Review : The Handmaid's Tale Season 1 and 2

Starring: Elisabeth MossMax MinghellaAmanda Brugel
Creator: Bruce Miller
TV Station: Hulu

Synopsis from IMDB :
Synopsis: A religion-based autocracy has taken over most of the United States, renaming the country Gilead. In this country, women are second-class citizens. Anyone trying to escape is punished. One such person is June, who is captured while trying to escape with her husband and child and is sentenced to be a handmaid, bearing children for childless government officials. As a handmaid, June is renamed Offred. This is her story.

The first time I saw the picture I was so curious about the TV series. At first, I thought this is a story of a maid, a regular servant with complicated tasks in her master's house. Oh, how wrong I was. This TV series is scary. The story is so cruel.

In Season 1, we are introduced to how June becomes a handmaid, her name is changed into Offred (it is taken from her master's name Fred Waterford) and how she is trying to break free from the rules slowly. From an obedient handmaid to a rebellious one. She also has an affair with some short a guard whom they call Eye, or specifically an undercover Eye who works as a driver called Nick Blaine.

In Season 2, the story continues to how June is treated because of her disobedience toward the Aunt Lydia. Then in the end how she delivers her baby, well hers and Nick's actually since Waterford is actually sterile.

The highlights of this series is Moss' wonderful performance and the creepiness of this future world. The setting and costume design feels like it is set on the past but the technology and timeline are set in the future so do not expect exquisite things like other futuristic movies. Like I said, one of the highlights of this series is the creepiness of the future world where the women's nightmare happen. I told one of my coworkers about this series and she was terrified of the plot.

I really like this TV series. It's well-acted, well-paced, well-scripted and really show the horror of the future.

I give this series : A+
