The Asinine "Hate" to Brie Larson and Captain Marvel

Hello everyone, in this post, I'd like to talk about the hate from "fans" which is directed to Brie Larson and eventually Captain Marvel. Since many moviegoers, especially those outside US, do not really familiar with this "hate or outrage" about the rising star, let me explain it to you from the beginning.

Brie Larson's Comment

So Brie Larson made a comment a while back ago about Wrinkle of Time movie. Wrinkle of Time movie is made for black children with its black main character and Oprah as the major supporting character. The is a sentence in the whole interview about she didn't care that 40-year-old white man about the movie. In my view, her comment is not exactly wrong.

A movie is always made for a certain target audience. That is a fact. What Brie Larson meant (which she was asked to explain it through an interview with Playlist) is that why we do not bring those target audience to comment about the movie. They are the target audience, let's hear what they think about the movie. Sound reasonable? Yes. In addition, Brie clarified that what she meant was their needs to be more perspectives in the room from groups, races and cultures who are not even in the room.

It is sad that Brie's comment does not represent the whole context of what she was talking about. Many of the haters are just following the "topic" without even reading the whole context of the interview. They just copied that sentence and turned it into a hate machine. When accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

Fake Headlines

This old comment triggers "the hates" for some reason. The hate produces so many fake headlines which create a snowball effect. The headlines are spread through social media and YouTube, so do not be surprised if you cannot find them on a reliable magazine or website. The headlines are:

Brie Larson hates white men

Brie Larson does not want white men to see the movie

Brie Larson does not want to do interviews with white men

Brie Larson does not want white press in her press junkets

Brie Larson wants females only in her press junkets

These headlines are drawn from the comment Brie Larson made in the vanity fair interview. These also the main topics of the haters to continue their hate against Brie. The problem is that you will never find these headlines anywhere in reliable sources. You will find them in YouTube videos. Brie Larson NEVER said those things but these haters frame as if she said it without giving sources in their description videos.

YouTubers and Social Media

The false headlines above are being used by Youtubers to gain more hate and obviously more views. The headlines are so effective that many Youtubers begin to follow the "trend" and share them through social media. This definitely rises their views. The problem is that, like I said before, no reliable source is mentioned. They also do not discuss the whole context of the interview. This can lead to some misunderstandings. I read a comment from someone who wrote that Brie was promoting Wrinkle in Time movie and etc. The problem is Brie was NOT promoting Wrinkle in Time. She was not even a part of it. See? They are too lazy to even open google.

The hate then continues to many other topics about Brie. It goes even more ridiculous such as commenting about Brie's butt and the lack of muscles in her body even though she plays a superhero. It is not wrong to expect a certain body figure to match a certain movie, but is it that important to hate her because of her butt? LOL

They want her to exercise more to gain butt and muscles LOL You know you cannot help it when your body is a lean type. Brie looks healthy and there is no problem with her body. Brie just does not have curves like Scarlett Johanson. She has more meat in her bones compare to Gal Gadot when she is a Wonder Women or even Alicia Vikander when she is Lara Croft. She just is not a type of person who exposes her abs to everyone and calls paps to take her pictures like Vikander did. Marvel even posted a special featurette video of her exercising like crazy, she uploaded many pictures and videos in her Instagram. Those haters just did not even care to do simple research.

Rotten Tomatoes - Audience Score

The hate continue to Rotten Tomatoes - The Audience Score. So for those who do not know, Rotten Tomatoes is a movie website where you can find much information about movies. It has a "Not Interested" and "Want to See" If you are a member of the site, you have a privilege to click one of those buttons.

Now, in 24 hours, the audience score for Captain Marvel's "Want to See" dropped drastically from 93% to 27%. Which is weird. In addition, many come from new users who join rotten tomatoes during that 24 hours. I am a user for RT for 8 years, so I know that when something like this comes out, it is very weird.

The audience score's impact, for me, has minimal impact on a movie because it is only based on the users which only a few percents of the worldwide moviegoers. Many people compare this to Last Jedi and Solo's performance. However, the case is totally different. Solo's bad performance mainly because of zero interest in the movie. It can be seen from the views of the trailers. In addition, it happened because of the unsatisfied feeling with The Last Jedi. That movie made over 1 billion worldwide, so I guess it's alright actually. The "hate" for The Last Jedi has an impact on Solo, that is true. Alita : Battle Angel has 93-94% audience score but it still has not reached 300M worldwide despite a big opening in China. With its 170M budget (without marekting), it needs 500M to break even.

What amuses me is that I know many of these haters. They are people who like to trash Rotten Tomatoes, saying that this site does not represent worldwide or even domestic moviegoers (which is true), so it is best for you to ignore it. Then, they themselves use this site to drag the audience's rating for Captain Marvel down and declare that people do not want to see this movie, that Captain Marvel will fail both box office and worldwide, and that only 27M opening because only 27% people want to see. I am like what?? Can you be consistent with your view?

Will it have a significant impact on Captain Marvel Worldwide or Domestic Box Office?

In Captain Marvel case, mainstream audiences do not have any valid point to hate this movie because it has not come out yet. You cannot hate something you never see. In addition, they do not even know about this whole"Brie Larson's comment controversy." Only those who are active in Youtubes and movie websites know and care about this. Next, will the hate for Captain Marvel affect other Marvel movies just like Last Jedi's to Solo? No. Because the next Marvel movies that come out this year are Avengers : Endgame and Spider-man : Far From Home. Are you sure that people will not see them? NO.

In order to truly understand what's going on in Endgame, you have to watch Captain Marvel first. With this movie, you will understand the reason why Captain Marvel is there, where is she this whole time and of course the extent of her power. I, for one, do not believe that Captain Marvel will be the one who defeats Thanos mainly because the main theme of Avengers movies is about teamwork. Russo brothers said so. I think that she has the power to help the Avengers to defeat Thanos, something not even Thor has. If you skip Captain Marvel, there will be questions about "How does she do that? Why Fury this? Why is that happening?" and so on. Therefore, Captain Marvel's haters but Avengers' lovers do not have any choice other than watching Captain Marvel, either when it comes out in theatres or after they watch Endgame.  So yeah...

The tracking for Captain Marvel is currently 100M+, boxoffice.pro even predicts it will go as high as 170M. I don't even believe this number. It is too high. I do believe it will open between 110M to 120M. There is no real competition for this movie for almost two weeks. Maybe it can open bigger but my number is that. The worldwide result can be 800M+, but again it can higher if words from mouth to mouth is strong. It only needs 500M to break even, a small number for a Marvel movie. If Ant-Man and the Wasp grosses 622M worldwide with 75M opening, then Captain Marvel can do it in just two weeks. Let's hope for the best.

Trashing someone just because you misinterpret what they mean is wrong. Poisoning people's mind with false headlines which lead to many ridiculous hates is pathetic. If you do not want to watch a movie, then fine. Do not watch it, but please do not poison people's mind with stupid false accusations you build yourself. It is just a movie starring a fictional character, whether it is successful or fail, it will not solve many serious problems in this world.
