Nation of Dunces? Even I Beg to Differ

An interesting article about Indonesian education caught my eyes. The title of the article is actually so offensive for some people. It is "Nation of Dunces? Indonesian parents beg to differ."

I cannot help but comment that "I am not a parent, but I also beg to differ." as soon as I read the headline. As someone with an Education degree, I have high hopes for the next generations of this beloved country. I believe that this country will have a better education system in the future. Maybe not in the near future but in the future.

Let's take a look at several quotes from this article that I want to discuss:

"While many surveys have shown Indonesia has a lot to do to improve its education, particularly when compared to its regional peers, most Indonesian parents, at least in urban areas, are optimistic the nation’s education is good enough to ensure a safe future for their children, according to a recent survey."

There are no words that can express my gratitude when I read this one. I hope that this trust from the parents will be a good impact for Indonesian education system, especially with the curriculum and the teachers. In addition, it will better that there is a collaboration between parents and teachers/schools in supervising the students' improvement. A good communication between parents and teachers will help to solve the problems that probably occur during students' learning process. An activity which includes both parents and teachers such as parents/teachers conference will be a place and medium to exchange ideas, problems, and solutions for their children.

"73.61 percent of Indonesian students performed poorly in mathematics, reading and science, only slightly higher than PISA's of 75.7 percent."

What caught my attention is the word 'reading' here. It is not a secret that the reading habit in Indonesian children is very low. This condition is what made me build my small library when I did SM3T a year ago. I really hope that future teachers will try to improve students' reading habit. I found some interesting activity in increasing students/ reading habbit. The activity is that a teacher gives a task to the students to read something at home and the tell it to their peers at school. This activity should be done since early age, in kindergarten or elementary school.

"Our conclusion was that we had to work harder in preparing our teachers, providing better school facilities and preparing our students," said Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy in a recent interview with The Jakarta Post

"preparing our teachers" is an something which influences me to pursue my dream to be a lecturer one day. It goes without saying that teacher is one of the most important components in education. The problem with teachers nowdays is that they also have a very low reading habit. I have found many teachers who are stick with their own "world" and never try to improve their ability because they are just too "busy" to find something new, whether it is about the materials such as trending news, nowdays phenomenon or teaching's tecniques such as cooperative learnings. They are stuck in traditional way of teaching.

I do hope that one one day I can be a lecturer therefore I can help in improving teachers' quality in term of reading habit, motivation, self-criticsm, and emotional skills because I believe that Indonesia teachers possess great cognitive skill already but the skills I have mentioned are the ones they are lacking of.
