Movie Review : A Quiet Place Part II

Director: John Krasinski

Starring: Emily Blunt, John Krasinki, Cillian Murphy, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe

Okay, so this movie is a sequel to the amazing A Quiet Place which was released in 2018. These movie pickups directly what the first one left. However, the film opens with Day 1 which tells us how the creatures we saw at the Part I came to earth. There is no exact explanation about it though. We experience what the people in the town do. A mysterious thing falls down from the sky and suddenly monsters start to appear out of nowhere. No news, no communication with the outside world, nothing, and it is nice.

Then we go back to where Part 1 left us. With their home was burned, Evelyn (Emily Blunt) decided to leave with her three children. They met an old friend, Emmet (Cillian Murphy), who lived in a factory that has a bunker. When Evelyn's son was injured because of a trap, the family and Emmet discover a song from a radio "Beyond the Sea". The daughter, Regan, believes that the song is a code that tells people to go to an island and decides to run away to find it. Evelyn asks Emmet to go after her. Then we are provided with two acts of amazing monster horror scenes.

I have to say that I thought the movie would be split into two parts. The first part was about the past (the monster origin) and the second part was the continuation, but I was wrong. But it was okay, I didn't complain though. Almost every aspect of the movie is great. The acting is great, the direction is great, the cinematography is great and most of all the editing is amazing.

It is very hard to balance two different scenes in one go. If one scene is less tense than the others, the audience will definitely think it is waste of time and actually takes away their experience with the movie. However, the scene of the factory vs radio station is very well-edited, well-made, and well-acted. Both are tense as hell, really taunting our nerves. What I love about this movie is that this has less jump scare than the previous one. It plays with our heart a lot, but without trying to rip it off our chest with unnecessary loud BAM!!

Just like other horror movies, this almost perfect movie also suffers from several cliche moments. The two stands out cliche moments is the scene when Evelyn's boy, Marcus, stupidly decides to roam the factory, leaving the safe place he is in when he KNOWS very well that the monster is out there. He has no weapon at all and he decides to make things complicated for his mother? What a stupid boy. Another cliche is the 'savior' whom Regan and Emmet meet at the island is killed by the monster after saving them. I have seen this 'savior dies protecting the main character' thing a lot in movies, especially horror movies.

In the end, this is an amazing horror movie. It is everything a horror monster fan can have. I love this movie a lot. However, if anyone asks me to choose between part 1 and 2, I think I'll choose the part 1. I feel like the scenarios in Part 1 are more coherent and less cliche too.

So, I give this movie A+
