With Corona virus (COVID19) haunts everyone's dream, all word is in "StayAtHome movement. Many countries are either in total lockdown or part lockdown. Here in Indonesia, we have part lockdown policy since there is no way a total lockdown can be implemented in this country. This policy, of course, has significant effects in the world's activities. One of them is the education field.
Almost all schools in this world are closed. The education field is running through e-learning system. The positive thing about this system is that it gives both teachers and students the opportunity to improve their ability and competency in using technology for a classroom activity. For the teachers, this system enables them to be introduced to an online class where they can learn how to create an online assignment, quizzes, task etc which for some teachers is their first time. For students, it gives them the opportunity to implement the theories they learn in the classroom and expand their knowledge in the up to date technology. However, what interests me is not about the teachers and students, but the e-learning's effect on the parents.
All parents have a high expectation for the teachers to shape their children into a great future generation. However, they have this thought that education is only the responsibility of the teachers just because they have put their children here. When something is wrong, they immediately blame the teachers. They say that teachers cannot teach their children well. Some are protesting about the techniques the teachers use to discipline their children. They have many reasons to blame the teachers when everything goes down with their children.
Since the students live an a boarding school, I will not deny that teachers play a big part in the students' development academically. However, most of the time parents forget that they do have a bigger part in their children development. The first educational environment is family, therefore how the children evolve depends on how the parents raise them and how their early environment influence them.
With this e-learning program, parents are demanded to go back to where they were supposed to. Parents are their children's pillar supports and teachers. The 'teachers' part is what catch the parents off guard. They are not ready to be what they actually have to be. So many parents are complaining about how naughty their children are. They are complaining about how difficult to teach their children. They are complaining about how difficult to make their children understand a subject, even though it is just a simple one. The parents finally know how hard it is to be a teacher.
I do hope that this realization will increase parents' respect for teachers. Teachers work very hard to make sure the students understand the materials, proper attitude and how to solve problems for their own future. When they reach their dream, teachers play a big part in it. I hope that with knowing how hard teachers' job is parents will not immediately jump into their own conclusion when the teachers are trying to discipline their children.
