Movie Review : Mortal Engines (2018)

Director : Christian Rivers
Casts: Hera Hilman, Robert Sheehan, Jihae, Hugo Waving

Mortal Engine takes place in the future where all cities are on wheels. The biggest city is London who is "devouring" other cities. Then there is a mysterious young woman, Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmar) becomes the only one who can stop London. Hester joins forces with Tom Natworthy (Robert Sheehan) and Anna Fang (Jihae). Then the journey to stop London begins...

The opening of this movie is great. The visual is stunning and the music is amazing. But... that's it. If you a fan of a popcorn movie, one which doesn't need any brain in order to understand the plot then this is a movie for you. Why? Because the movie is very predictable. If you have watched Star Wars and YA movies with cliches adventure, romance and villain, oh then, believe me, you will be able to predict the plot of this movie. Everything is very obvious.

The movie is adapted from a YA book which I am not familiar with therefore I cannot say whether the movie is worse or better than the book. But I hope that the book is much better. The visual, like I said, is the best thing in the movie. It's very gorgeous (some are bad in some scenes, but it's okay). However, the script is not good, the acting is not good. I feel like the casts are bland, except for Jihae but she is not on screen much, so we have to make do with terrible actors. Maybe they are good actors, who knows? but certainly not in this movie. The only intriguing thing for me is that when Hester Shaw put on her red mask. She looks badass but when she opens it and says the lines that feel kinda hard to believe. Maybe we should blame the script because the characters are so thin that I do not really care what happens to them.

In conclusion, the movie doesn't have a balance in great visual and storytelling. The visual is great but this is a boring, uninteresting, and predictable movie.

I give this movie : C-
