When I talk about leadership, many of my friends and colleagues immediately think about higher rank jobs. Since we are teachers, most of them think about Headmasters, Head of Curriculum, owner of a school, etc. They are not wrong since the top of organisations leaders, but they are not 100% true. In my opinion, a leader comes in many forms. Everyone has leadership quality in themselves. The issue is whether they are brave enough to embrace it.
Everyone possesses leadership quality and the simplest example is being a leader of ourselves. The ability to make sure we do our best in everything, the ability to be a discipline, the ability to be responsible with our jobs, the ability to be a fair judge and many others are what makes us a leader of ourselves.
What many people ignore is that the ability to lead ourselves gives impact to our environment. Many people expect a good environment in their workplace, but they do not do anything to establish it. They complain about how hard the pressure is, how unfriendly their colleagues are, how programs do not progress as they should, how everything is always behind the schedule, bla bla bla...
Unfortunately, no one decides to take the initiative to create a change to overcome these problems. They are unaware that the lack of individual leadership is one of several causes of this unhealthy workplace environment. By being a leader of yourself is the first step in achieving a comfortable environment which eventually leads to successful programs or projects in an institution or organisation.
The first leadership quality we have to possess is discipline. Discipline is about the ability to achieve our targets on time. It does not matter when you start but when you finish it is what matters. Create a deadline and do not let other things distract you from finishing it. When you finally become a disciplined person, you will be able to face hard pressure.
The second leadership quality is the ability to encourage and support our colleagues. We know that we cannot live alone; we need other people to survive. In the workplace, we cannot succeed a program alone. That is why we create a committee. What we usually forget is that we need to encourage our team to do their best. When a team is created and jobs are divided, pressure begins to haunt the members. Sure, a deadline is important but encouragement and support are crucial in getting the best performance of someone.
The last important quality is committed. Whether you love your job or not, commitment is important. Commitment is a part of the responsibility. This is how other people judge your quality as a person. People will take you seriously if you manage to do your job but if you fail, do not expect people to trust you with something valuable. I believe this is the most important quality among others. When you have a good commitment, you will be a disciple person and able to encourage and influence people around you.
Leadership can be found in yourself if you are brave enough to embrace it...
